Celebrate MLK

Our school system hosts an annual MLK Celebration.  Elementary school students make posters.  This year's theme is bringing King's message forward.  My students will watch a great movie, Our Friend Martin, read an MLK picture book,  then read and discuss King's quotes and how we can bring forward his message and intent now and in the future.  After that students will create wonderful posters.

As students craft their posters, we'll discuss the following points:

  • What is the best way to convey a message with a poster?
  • What is the best way to organize a poster including size of text, colors, frames and images?
  • What kind of writing draws attention to your poster i.e. headlines, catchy phrases, challenging statements and questions?
  • What is the draft process like when making a poster--how do you draft a poster?
  • How do you edit a poster well?
  • What is the final creation stage like?

  1. Maureen,
Love your ideas - We are in the middle of reading Our Friend Martin; we will also participate in a Choral Reading called, Let Freedom Ring. I love the idea of using the quotes.

As always thank you for sharing your wonderful work!

    Best,
    Nancy

  2. Hi Nancy, Thanks for adding ideas. Any chance you could send me a copy of that choral reading. I'd love to read it with my students--it will help us with our fluency goals too. Take care.
